Injuries We Treat

Every footy injury. Properly done.

AFL places unique physical demands on your body — explosive sprint loads, high-impact collisions, rotational forces, repetitive overhead marking. We've built our approach around those specific demands, not generic sports physio protocols.

Book assessment

According to the AFL Medical Officers' Association, these injuries represent over 80% of all AFL presentations.

01

Hamstring Strains

The single most common AFL injury — accounting for nearly 15% of all presentations league-wide. Whether it's a Grade 1 tweak from overreaching for a loose ball or a severe Grade 3 tear from explosive sprinting, the return-to-play timeline is non-negotiable. We use objective strength testing to determine readiness, not just "pain-free" as the benchmark. Going back too early is the leading cause of re-injury.

Grade 1: 1–3 weeks · Grade 2: 3–6 weeks · Grade 3: 8–12 weeks
02

Shoulder Injuries

AC joint sprains, rotator cuff tears, shoulder dislocations, and posterior capsule tightness from repeated overhead marking. Shoulder injuries in AFL players require a different rehabilitation approach to the general population — the explosive overhead demands of marking and handpassing under pressure must be specifically trained before return. Research from Sports Medicine Australia shows proper physio reduces shoulder re-injury rates by up to 60%.

03

ACL & Knee Injuries

ACL tears, meniscus injuries, and patellofemoral pain are career-defining injuries in AFL. Our comprehensive ACL rehabilitation program has returned countless players to the field stronger than before. Return-to-play criteria include objective strength testing, agility assessment, and sport-specific functional testing — not just a surgeon's clearance letter. Studies in the British Journal of Sports Medicine confirm comprehensive ACL rehab significantly reduces re-injury risk.

ACL: 9–12 months · Meniscus: 6–12 weeks
04

Ankle Sprains & Syndesmosis

High ankle sprains (syndesmosis injuries) are increasingly common in AFL and require 25% longer recovery time than standard lateral ankle sprains — a fact many club trainers underestimate. Inadequate rehab of any ankle injury leads to chronic instability, recurrent sprains, and eventually arthritis. We assess proprioception, strength, and functional load tolerance before any return-to-play decision, using protocols aligned with Australian Institute of Sport guidelines.

05

Groin & Hip Injuries

Osteitis pubis, hip flexor strains, and adductor tears are among the most complex injuries in AFL — capable of sidelining players for months if not addressed properly. The groin is a particularly poorly understood region that requires biomechanical analysis of both the hip and lumbo-pelvic movement patterns to treat effectively. Our hip and groin rehabilitation addresses the underlying movement dysfunctions, not just the painful tissue.

Complex groin: 6–16 weeks depending on severity
06

Lower Back Injuries

The rotational demands of AFL — handballing, spoiling, and tackling — place enormous stress on the lumbar spine. Acute facet joint injuries, disc problems, and chronic muscular tightness are all common presentations. We address back injuries through both hands-on treatment and targeted exercise, using evidence-based techniques endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

"Getting back on the field isn't just about being pain-free — it's about being genuinely ready for what the game throws at you. That gap between pain-free and match-ready is where most AFL re-injuries happen."
Phill Danzi — Physiotherapist, Evolutio Sports Physio Richmond

Our Approach

Why Melbourne's AFL players choose Evolutio.

From local VAFA clubs to elite environments, we've been treating AFL injuries at every level since 2013. Here's what makes our approach different.

01

Real AFL Experience at Every Level

Our team has worked in elite AFL and AFLW environments and has treated players across the VAFA, EFL, VFL, and community football for over a decade. That experience directly shapes how we assess and rehabilitate every patient, regardless of their level.

02

Objective Return-to-Play Testing

We don't clear players based on "feels good." We use strength testing, functional movement screens, and AFL-specific loading tests to objectively confirm readiness. Being 90% is when most re-injuries happen. We wait for 100%.

03

45-Minute Initial Assessments

AFL injuries are complex. We take the time to understand your injury mechanism, your playing position, your training demands, and your goals before we start treatment. You'll leave your first session with a clear diagnosis and realistic timeline.

04

We Find the Underlying Cause

Recurring hamstring strains rarely happen in isolation. Usually there's a strength imbalance, a gait pattern, or a training load issue driving them. We identify and fix that, not just the immediate injury — so you stop seeing us for the same thing every season.

05

Position-Specific Rehabilitation

A key forward's return-to-play demands are completely different from a midfielder's or a defender's. We tailor the final phase of rehabilitation to your specific on-field role — jump training, sprint mechanics, contact preparation — not a generic protocol.

06

In Melbourne's Football Heartland

We're 2 minutes from Punt Road Oval, 5 minutes from the MCG, and walking distance from AAMI Park. We understand Melbourne's football culture from the inside — we're part of it.

Full FAQ page

Hamstring strains are by far the most common — accounting for nearly 15% of all AFL injury presentations. After that: shoulder injuries (AC joint, rotator cuff, dislocation), knee injuries (ACL, meniscus, patellofemoral), ankle sprains and syndesmosis, groin strains and osteitis pubis, and lower back pain. We also treat calf strains, quad tears, and concussion-related presentations.

Grade 1: typically 1–3 weeks. Grade 2: 3–6 weeks. Grade 3: 8–12 weeks. But here's the thing — returning at 90% hamstring strength is exactly when re-injuries happen. We use objective strength testing and sprint load monitoring before clearing any player. The number of weeks matters less than whether your hamstring can actually handle full sprint loads. We'll be honest with you about where you are.

Recurring hamstring strains are almost always a sign of incomplete rehabilitation — returning before the muscle was genuinely ready, or not addressing the underlying cause. Common culprits: anterior pelvic tilt from hip flexor tightness, asymmetrical gluteal strength, poor sprint mechanics, or training load spikes. We assess the whole picture — not just the hamstring — to break the cycle. Research from the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport shows addressing underlying factors reduces re-injury by up to 70%.

No referral needed for standard physiotherapy. Book directly online or call 03 9100 3798. A GP referral is only required for WorkCover, TAC, or Medicare EPC plans. Private health insurance with physiotherapy extras is processed on the spot via HICAPS — you pay only the gap.

Almost always, yes. We design modified training programs that maintain your fitness and conditioning while protecting the injured structure. Complete rest is rarely appropriate for AFL injuries. We'll work with your coach and club trainer to ensure your modified program makes sense in your team's context. The goal is to keep you as close to match-fit as possible throughout recovery.

We work closely with Melbourne's leading sports medicine doctors and orthopaedic surgeons. If surgery is indicated, we can provide pre-surgical preparation — often called "prehab" — to improve your condition going into the procedure, which consistently leads to better post-surgical outcomes. Post-surgical rehabilitation for AFL-specific injuries like ACL reconstruction, shoulder stabilisation, and ankle reconstruction is a core part of what we do. See the AOA patient information for surgical details.

Yes — the majority of the AFL players we treat are local competition players from VAFA, EFL, and community football clubs across Melbourne. We treat players from Richmond City FC, Old Trinity FC, Marcellin Old Collegians, and many others. We also work directly with a number of club committees on season-long physiotherapy arrangements. Contact us to discuss club-level arrangements.
