What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiology is a specialised allied health profession focused on using exercise as medicine to prevent, manage, and treat chronic health conditions and injuries. Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are university-trained health professionals with postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Exercise Physiology, accredited through Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Unlike personal trainers who work with healthy populations, Exercise Physiologists are qualified to work with people who have:

  • Chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, COPD, arthritis)

  • Neurological conditions (Parkinson's, MS, stroke recovery)

  • Mental health conditions (depression, anxiety)

  • Disabilities (NDIS participants)

  • Complex medical histories requiring specialised exercise prescription

Our Exercise Physiologists in Richmond create safe, effective, evidence-based exercise programs tailored to your specific health conditions, medications, and functional abilities. We work alongside your medical team—including GPs, specialists, and physiotherapists—to provide comprehensive care.

Exercise Physiology vs Physiotherapy: Which Do You Need?

This is one of the most common questions we hear at our Richmond clinic. While both are allied health professionals who help with movement and rehabilitation, there are important differences:

See an Exercise Physiologist When:

  • You have a chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, COPD) that requires ongoing exercise management

  • You're recovering from or living with cancer and need specialised exercise support

  • You need help managing your condition long-term through exercise prescription

  • You want to start exercising but have health concerns that make it unsafe without supervision

  • You're on an NDIS plan and need capacity building through exercise

  • Your GP has recommended a Medicare CDM plan for chronic disease management

  • You need falls prevention and balance training

  • You have complex medical history requiring specialised exercise prescription

See a Physiotherapist When:

  • You have an acute injury (sprained ankle, back strain, sports injury)

  • You need hands-on manual therapy for joint or muscle problems

  • You require post-surgical rehabilitation in the early stages

  • You need pain management techniques like dry needling

  • You have a musculoskeletal issue that needs assessment and treatment

The Good News: We Have Both!

At Evolutio Richmond, our Exercise Physiologists and Sports Physiotherapists work collaboratively. Many clients see both practitioners depending on their needs. For example:

  • A runner with knee pain might see a physiotherapist for manual therapy and running analysis, plus an Exercise Physiologist for strength programming

  • Someone with diabetes and back pain might see a physiotherapist for spinal treatment and an EP for diabetes management

  • A cancer patient might see both—physio for lymphedema management and EP for exercise prescription during treatment

Frequently Asked Questions - Exercise Physiology Richmond

Do I need a referral to see an Exercise Physiologist?

No, you don't need a referral for self-funded appointments. However, if you want to access Medicare CDM subsidies, you'll need a referral from your GP. For NDIS, DVA, WorkCover, or TAC, specific referral requirements apply—contact us and we'll guide you through the process.

How is an Exercise Physiologist different from a personal trainer?

Exercise Physiologists have university degrees (typically 4 years including postgraduate study) and are trained to work with people who have chronic diseases, injuries, and complex medical conditions. We're registered healthcare professionals who can prescribe exercise as medicine, work with medications, and provide services through Medicare, NDIS, and private health insurance. Personal trainers work with healthy populations for general fitness goals.

Where is Evolutio Exercise Physiology located in Richmond?

We're located at 11/3 Bromham Place, Richmond VIC 3121—just an 8-minute walk from Richmond Station. We're easily accessible from South Yarra, Prahran, Toorak, Collingwood, Abbotsford, Melbourne CBD, Hawthorn, and all inner-east suburbs. There's free 2-4 hour street parking nearby, and we have secure bike parking.

Can Exercise Physiology help with diabetes management?

Absolutely! Exercise is one of the most powerful tools for managing both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Our Exercise Physiologists create safe, effective programs that help improve blood glucose control, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular health, and weight management. We work closely with your endocrinologist or diabetes educator to ensure your exercise program complements your medication and dietary management. We also monitor blood glucose levels during sessions if needed and teach you how to exercise safely with diabetes.

Is Exercise Physiology safe during cancer treatment?

Yes—research shows that exercise during cancer treatment is not only safe but highly beneficial when supervised by a qualified Exercise Physiologist. Exercise can help manage treatment side effects like fatigue, nausea, and muscle loss, improve treatment tolerance, maintain physical function, and even improve survival outcomes for some cancers. We work alongside your oncology team at centers like Peter Mac, Austin Health, and St Vincent's to create exercise programs that are appropriate for your specific cancer type, treatment stage, and current health status.

How long are Exercise Physiology sessions at Evolutio?

Initial assessments are 60 minutes (most clinics only offer 30-45 minutes), and follow-up sessions are 45 minutes. We don't rush you. You'll have time for a thorough assessment, proper education, and hands-on exercise guidance. You'll also see the same Exercise Physiologist every time—no rotating through different practitioners.

Do you bulk bill for Exercise Physiology?

We bulk bill DVA Gold Card holders for eligible conditions. For Medicare CDM plans, there's a gap payment (Medicare rebates $63.25, you pay the difference). For NDIS, we charge the NDIS scheduled fee of $193.99. Private health insurance rebates are processed instantly via HICAPS—most clients pay $105-145 out-of-pocket depending on their level of coverage.

Can I claim Exercise Physiology on my private health insurance?

Yes! If you have extras cover that includes Exercise Physiology or allied health, you can claim on the spot via our HICAPS terminal. Most health funds provide $30-50 rebate per session, meaning you typically pay $105-145 out-of-pocket. We work with all major funds including Medibank, Bupa, HCF, NIB, and Australian Unity.

What should I wear to an Exercise Physiology appointment?

Wear comfortable exercise clothing and supportive athletic shoes. Bring a water bottle, any relevant medical reports or scans, and your private health insurance card if you're claiming. If you take medications, bring a list or your medication packaging. For initial assessments, we'll be doing movement testing, so comfortable clothing you can move in is essential.

How many Exercise Physiology sessions will I need?

This varies greatly depending on your condition, goals, and needs. Some clients need just a few sessions to learn a safe exercise program they can continue independently. Others with chronic conditions benefit from ongoing supervision (weekly or fortnightly) to monitor progress, adjust programs, and stay accountable. We'll discuss a realistic timeline during your initial assessment and regularly review your progress. There's never pressure to book more sessions than you need.

Can you provide Exercise Physiology at home or in aged care?

We focus on clinic-based services at our Richmond location to provide the best quality care with proper equipment. However, for clients with significant mobility limitations or those in aged care facilities nearby, contact us to discuss options. We can sometimes accommodate home visits for Home Care Package or NDIS participants in the Richmond, South Yarra, Prahran, and Toorak areas.

What's the cancellation policy?

We require 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur a fee. We understand life happens—just let us know as soon as possible and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

How Exercise Physiology Can Help Manage Type 2 Diabetes in Melbourne

Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest-growing health conditions in Australia, but exercise is one of the most powerful tools for managing it. Our Exercise Physiologists in Richmond specialize in creating safe, effective diabetes management programs.

How Exercise Helps Diabetes

  • Improves insulin sensitivity: Exercise helps your muscles use glucose more effectively, reducing the need for medication

  • Lowers blood glucose levels: Both immediately during exercise and for 24-48 hours afterward

  • Supports weight management: Exercise combined with diet helps achieve and maintain healthy weight

  • Reduces cardiovascular risk: Diabetes increases heart disease risk—exercise protects your heart

  • Improves HbA1c: Regular exercise can reduce HbA1c by 0.5-1.0%, reducing complications

Our Diabetes Exercise Physiology Approach

We create individualized programs considering your:

  • Current fitness level and exercise history

  • Diabetes medications (insulin, metformin, etc.)

  • Blood glucose patterns and HbA1c levels

  • Any diabetes-related complications (neuropathy, retinopathy)

  • Other health conditions (heart disease, arthritis, obesity)

  • Personal goals and lifestyle constraints

We teach you how to exercise safely with diabetes, including blood glucose monitoring, recognizing hypo/hyperglycemia symptoms, and adjusting exercise around meals and medications. Many of our diabetes clients access our services through Medicare CDM plans, receiving 5 subsidized sessions per year.
