Getting Started

What should I expect at my first physio appointment at Evolutio Richmond?

Your first visit to Evolutio is designed to be welcoming and comprehensive. Here's exactly what happens during your 45-minute initial assessment:

Before Your Session: Arrive 10-15 minutes early. You'll be greeted personally by your physiotherapist or admin team in our unique warehouse-style waiting area - think reclaimed wood furniture, coffee available, and carefully curated indie music rather than a sterile medical environment.

Initial Consultation (15 minutes): Your physiotherapist will sit down with you to gain a deeper understanding of your story. We'll discuss how your injury occurred, what activities make it better or worse, and importantly, what your goals are. Whether you're a Richmond local dealing with desk-related pain or elite athlete training for the Melbourne Marathon, we want to understand how this injury is impacting your life.

Physical Assessment (20 minutes): This includes testing your strength, flexibility, movement patterns, and any specific areas of concern. We may assess your posture, gait, and perform special tests relevant to your condition. For cyclists, this might include bike-specific movement assessments. For office workers, we'll examine how prolonged sitting affects your body.

Diagnosis and Treatment Plan (10 minutes): Your physiotherapist will explain the findings in clear, easy-to-understand terms, without using medical jargon. We'll discuss your diagnosis, expected recovery timeline, and create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your busy Melbourne lifestyle.

Initial Treatment: Unlike many clinics, we begin hands-on treatment in your first session. This might include manual therapy, gentle mobilisation, or specific exercises, depending on your condition.

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (shorts for lower body issues, singlet for shoulder/neck problems)

  • Any relevant scans, reports, or referral letters

  • Your sports shoes if you have a lower limb or back issue

  • A list of questions you'd like to ask

What Makes Evolutio Different:

  • Personal greeting from your physio

  • Non-clinical atmosphere with coffee and music

  • 45-minute comprehensive assessments (many clinics only offer 30 minutes)

  • Treatment begins immediately, not just assessment

  • Clear communication about your condition and next steps

After Your Session: Within 48 hours, you'll receive an email summary including your diagnosis, treatment plan, home exercises (with video links), and clear timeline expectations. You'll know exactly what to expect moving forward.

Booking & Appointments

Can I book my appointment online?

Yes, you can easily book your appointments online through our website. Our online booking system is available 24/7, allowing you to select your preferred physiotherapist, time, and service at your convenience.

What is your policy for changing or cancelling appointments?

We require at least 24 hours' notice if you need to change or cancel your appointment. This allows us to offer the slot to another patient who may require care. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur a fee. You can manage your booking online or by calling us.

Can I talk to a Physiotherapist first before coming in?

Sure, we'd be more than happy to chat with you. If you Whatsapp message +61430436531, our first available Physio will call you back as soon as possible to discuss your issue and guide you. Alternatively, you can call us at +6191003798 or email info@evolutio.com.au, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

What if I arrive late for my appointment?

Please notify us if you anticipate being late. While we will do our best to accommodate, your session may need to be shortened to ensure subsequent appointments run on time. We aim to provide every patient with their full scheduled treatment duration.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your treatment area. For example, a t-shirt or singlet and shorts/leggings are often suitable. Sometimes, we may need to assess your spine and surrounding areas, as they can influence your specific condition.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies for each individual. It depends on factors such as your specific injury, how long you've experienced symptoms, your personal goals, and your commitment to your home exercise program. Following your initial assessment, we will provide an estimated treatment timeline and regularly review your progress with you.

I work long hours - do you have early morning or evening appointments?

Yes, we're open Monday-Thursday 8:00 AM-7:30 PM and Friday 8:00 AM-6:00 PM to accommodate busy professional schedules. Many of our Richmond clients book early morning sessions before work or evening appointments after their commute.

Do you send appointment reminders via text or email?

Yes, we send automatic appointment reminders via SMS and email. You can also manage your appointments through our online booking system, which is mobile-friendly for busy professionals on the go.

Can I communicate with my physio between appointments?

Yes, you can email your physiotherapist for general exercise questions or minor concerns. For members, we also offer WhatsApp communication during business hours for quick questions and check-ins.

Do you offer telehealth consultations for follow-up appointments?

We can provide exercise guidance and check-ins via video call for established patients who can't make it to the clinic due to work commitments or travel.

EPC Referrals & Chronic Disease Management Plans

Can I use an EPC Plan (Chronic Disease Management Plan) at Evolutio?

Yes, if your GP has provided you with an EPC (Enhanced Primary Care) or Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, you can use it for Medicare-subsidised physiotherapy services at Evolutio. You will typically pay the full fee upfront, unfortunately we don’t have the current software to process claims on the spot, so you will have to download Medicare Easyclaim app and claim yourself with your invoice after our session. (currently $58.30), leaving an out-of-pocket gap.

What is an EPC Plan and how does it work?

An EPC (Enhanced Primary Care) Plan, also known as a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, is a Medicare-funded program that provides subsidised allied health services for people with chronic medical conditions. Your GP develops a care plan that outlines your health goals and treatment needs, then refers you to allied health professionals like physiotherapists. Medicare provides a rebate for up to 5 allied health visits per calendar year under this plan.

Who is eligible for an EPC Plan?

You may be eligible for an EPC Plan if you have a chronic medical condition that:

  • Has been present for at least 6 months (or is terminal)

  • Requires ongoing care from your GP and other health professionals

  • Would benefit from a team care approach

  • Common conditions include diabetes, arthritis, chronic pain, heart disease, stroke recovery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and musculoskeletal conditions.

What chronic conditions do you treat under EPC Plans?

We treat a wide range of chronic conditions under EPC Plans including:

  • Chronic back and neck pain

  • Arthritis and joint conditions

  • Diabetes-related mobility issues

  • Post-stroke rehabilitation and mobility

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exercise programs

  • Heart disease rehabilitation and fitness programs

  • Osteoporosis and falls prevention

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Fibromyalgia management

  • Balance and mobility issues in older adults

  • Chronic pain management and movement therapy

How much is the Medicare rebate for EPC physiotherapy?

The current Medicare rebate for EPC physiotherapy is $58.30 per session.

How many EPC physiotherapy sessions am I entitled to?

Under the EPC Plan, you are entitled to up to 5 allied health visits per calendar year. These 5 visits can be distributed among different allied health professionals (physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, dietitian, etc.) as determined by your GP's care plan. If you need additional sessions beyond the 5 Medicare-subsidised visits, you can continue treatment at our standard private rates.

Do I need a referral from my GP for EPC physiotherapy?

Yes, you must have a valid EPC referral from your GP to access Medicare-subsidised physiotherapy. Your GP will need to:

  • Assess your chronic condition and determine you would benefit from allied health services

  • Develop a Chronic Disease Management Plan

  • Provide you with a referral letter specifying physiotherapy treatment

  • The referral is valid for 12 months from the date of issue

How do I Book an Initial EPC Physiotherapy Session?

You can book an initial EPC Physiotherapy appointment by calling us on +6191003798, whatsapping us on +61 430 436 531 or Booking Online Here

How do I get an EPC Plan from my GP?

To obtain an EPC Plan:

  1. Book an appointment with your regular GP

  2. Discuss your chronic condition and how it affects your daily activities

  3. Ask if you're eligible for an EPC Plan and allied health referrals

  4. Your GP will conduct a comprehensive assessment and develop your care plan

  5. If appropriate, your GP will provide referrals for physiotherapy and other allied health services

  6. Bring your referral to Evolutio for your subsidised physiotherapy sessions

Can I use my EPC Plan immediately after receiving it?

Yes, once you have your EPC referral from your GP, you can book and attend physiotherapy sessions immediately. We recommend booking your appointment as soon as possible to make the most of your 5 Medicare-subsidised sessions within the calendar year.

What happens when I've used all 5 EPC sessions?

Once you've used your 5 Medicare-subsidised sessions for the calendar year, you have several options:

  • Continue physiotherapy at our standard private rates

  • Check if you're eligible for a new EPC Plan in the following calendar year

  • Explore other funding options like private health insurance

  • Discuss with your GP whether additional allied health services would be beneficial

What's the difference between EPC Plans and private physiotherapy?

EPC Plans:

  • Medicare rebate of $58.30 per session (you pay the gap)

  • Limited to 5 sessions per calendar year

  • Requires GP referral and chronic condition

  • Focused on chronic disease management

Private Physiotherapy:

  • Full fee applies (may have private health insurance rebate)

  • Unlimited sessions

  • No referral required for most conditions

  • Can treat acute and chronic conditions

Can I combine EPC sessions with private health insurance?

Unfortunately you can only choose one, either using your private health insurance or choosing EPC per appointment. This avoids you potentially getting paid more than what the appointment is worth. So you can choose what you would like to do if you have both.

Do I need to bring anything specific for my EPC physiotherapy appointment?

For your EPC physiotherapy appointment, please bring:

  • Your EPC referral letter from your GP

  • Medicare card

  • Photo identification

  • Private health insurance card (if applicable)

  • Any relevant medical reports or imaging related to your chronic condition

  • A list of current medications

  • Details about your chronic condition and how it affects your daily activities

Can my EPC Plan cover other services besides physiotherapy?

Yes, your EPC Plan can provide access to various allied health professionals including:

  • Exercise physiologists

  • Dietitians

  • Occupational therapists

  • Speech pathologists

  • Audiologists

  • Optometrists

  • Podiatrists

  • Social workers

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners

The 5 Medicare-subsidised visits can be distributed among these services as determined by your GP's care plan and your health needs.

What if my chronic condition changes or improves?

If your chronic condition changes significantly, it's important to discuss this with your GP. They may need to review and update your EPC Plan to ensure it remains appropriate for your current health needs. Your GP can modify your care plan and referrals as needed to provide the most effective treatment approach for your evolving condition.

Professional Lifestyle & Work-Related Injuries

I'm training for a half marathon - can you help prevent injuries while I increase my mileage?

Yes! Many of our Richmond runners train for Melbourne Marathon and other events. We offer running assessments, gait analysis, and injury prevention programs specifically designed for recreational runners increasing their training load.

How quickly can I get back to my training routine after treatment?

This depends on your specific injury, but we understand your active lifestyle is important. We'll create a modified training plan so you can stay active during recovery, and we'll progress you back to full training as quickly and safely as possible.

Do you understand the demands of balancing career and fitness goals?

Completely. Most of our practitioners are active themselves and understand the challenge of maintaining fitness with a demanding career. We'll work with your schedule and lifestyle, not against it.

I spend 10+ hours a day at my desk - can you help with my chronic neck and back pain?

Absolutely. Desk-related injuries are prevalent among Richmond professionals. We specialise in treating "tech neck," lower back pain from prolonged sitting, and shoulder tension from poor ergonomics. We'll assess your workstation setup, provide targeted exercises you can do at your desk, and develop a treatment plan that fits around your work schedule.

Can you provide ergonomic assessments for my home office setup?

Yes, we offer comprehensive workstation assessments for both home and office environments. We'll evaluate your desk height, monitor position, chair setup, keyboard and mouse placement, and lighting. We then provide practical recommendations to prevent repetitive strain injuries and reduce workplace-related pain.

I travel frequently for work - how can I maintain my treatment progress?

We understand the challenges of frequent business travel. We'll provide you with travel-friendly exercise routines, ergonomic tips for flights and hotel stays, and strategies to maintain your progress while away. We can also schedule intensive sessions around your travel schedule and provide virtual check-ins when needed.

I'm experiencing headaches from work stress and long screen time - can physiotherapy help?

Yes, tension headaches often stem from neck muscle tightness, poor posture, and jaw clenching related to work stress. We can treat the physical components through manual therapy, teach stress-relief techniques, and provide exercises to reduce muscle tension. We also address underlying postural issues contributing to your headaches.

My work involves frequent presentations and public speaking - can you help with tension and posture?

Definitely. Many professionals develop shoulder and neck tension from presentation stress and poor standing posture. We can teach you breathing techniques, posture correction strategies, and provide exercises to reduce pre-presentation anxiety and improve your confident stance.

I have early morning or late evening meetings - do you offer flexible appointment times?

Yes, we understand that Richmond professionals often work outside standard hours. We offer early morning appointments from 7am and evening appointments until 7pm to accommodate your schedule. We also provide Saturday appointments for busy weekdays.

Can you help me stay injury-free during my lunch break gym sessions?

Absolutely. We can design efficient warm-up routines for short gym sessions, provide injury prevention strategies for popular lunch-time activities (CrossFit, F45, running), and teach you how to maximise your limited workout time safely.

I'm getting wrist and forearm pain from excessive computer use - what can you do?

Computer-related repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are very common in professional environments. We treat conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow from mouse use, and forearm tension. Treatment includes manual therapy, specific exercises, workplace modifications, and ergonomic education to prevent recurrence.

How do you accommodate my unpredictable work schedule with urgent deadlines?

We understand that professional demands can be unpredictable. We offer flexible rescheduling policies for genuine work emergencies, can provide intensive treatment sessions when you have availability, and maintain communication via email or phone for urgent concerns between appointments.

I'm experiencing back pain from long commutes and sitting in traffic - can you help?

Yes, prolonged driving and commuting can cause significant back and hip issues. We'll assess your driving posture, provide seat adjustment recommendations, teach exercises you can do at traffic lights, and develop strategies to counteract the effects of long commutes.

Can physiotherapy help with the physical effects of work-related stress?

Definitely. Work stress often manifests physically as muscle tension, headaches, jaw clenching (TMJ), sleep disturbances affecting recovery, and increased injury susceptibility. We address these physical symptoms while providing strategies to manage stress-related muscle tension and improve your body's resilience to workplace pressures.

I work in finance/law/consulting with intense deadline pressure - do you understand high-stress environments?

Yes, many of our clients work in high-pressure professional environments around Melbourne's business district. We understand how deadline stress affects your body, the challenge of maintaining health during busy periods, and the importance of quick, effective treatment that doesn't disrupt your career momentum.

How can I prevent injury during networking events and corporate functions?

Professional events often involve prolonged standing, uncomfortable shoes, and awkward social postures. We can provide strategies for maintaining good posture during networking, recommend supportive footwear options, and teach discrete exercises you can do during breaks to prevent back and foot pain.

I'm experiencing eye strain and neck pain from video conferencing - is this treatable?

Video conference-related injuries have become increasingly common. We treat the neck strain from poor camera positioning, eye strain-related headaches, and shoulder tension from inadequate desk setups during virtual meetings. We'll optimise your home office setup for extended video calls.

Can you help me maintain my fitness regime during busy work periods?

Yes, we can design time-efficient exercise programs that maintain your fitness during demanding work periods. This includes 10-15 minute desk-based routines, high-intensity interval training for limited time slots, and strategies to stay active even during your busiest weeks.

Recovery Timeline & Expectations

How long does physiotherapy take to work?

The timeline for physiotherapy results varies significantly based on your condition, but here's what you can realistically expect:

Immediate Relief (1-2 sessions): Many patients experience some pain relief and improved movement after their first or second session, particularly for acute muscle strains, joint stiffness from poor posture, recent sports injuries, and tension-related neck and shoulder pain.

Significant Improvement (4-6 weeks): Most conditions show substantial improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent treatment, including desk-related injuries (tech neck, lower back pain), running injuries (runner's knee, shin splints), cycling-related issues, and recovery from minor surgeries.

Complete Recovery (2-6 months): More complex conditions may require longer treatment including chronic pain conditions, post-surgical rehabilitation, severe ligament or muscle tears, and complex biomechanical issues.

When should I expect to feel better after starting physiotherapy?

Most patients notice some improvement within the first 3-4 sessions. You might experience reduced pain levels during daily activities, better sleep quality, improved movement and flexibility, or decreased stiffness in the morning. However, significant functional improvement typically takes 4-6 weeks of consistent treatment.

What factors affect how quickly physiotherapy works?

Several key factors influence your recovery speed:

Injury Type and Severity:

  • Acute injuries (recent) typically heal faster than chronic conditions

  • Soft tissue injuries require 4-6 weeks minimum healing time

  • Chronic conditions (3+ months) require longer, progressive treatment

Your Commitment: Patients who consistently complete home exercise programs recover 2-3 times faster than those who don't. This includes daily prescribed exercises, activity modifications, attending sessions as scheduled, and following ergonomic advice.

Age and Fitness Level: Younger, fitter individuals typically recover faster, though previous injury history and overall health status also affect healing capacity.

How long should I try physiotherapy before expecting results?

You should see some improvement within 4-5 sessions. If you're not experiencing any positive changes after this timeframe, your physiotherapist should reassess your condition. This might indicate the need for additional imaging, a different treatment approach, or specialist attention.

Why does physiotherapy sometimes feel worse before it gets better?

This is normal and expected in many cases. During the first few sessions, your body may react to new movements and exercises, muscles that haven't been used properly may feel sore, and your physiotherapist may identify compensatory patterns that need correcting. This temporary increase in discomfort usually settles within 1-2 weeks as your body adapts.

Condition-Specific Recovery Times

How long does physiotherapy take for back pain?

Acute back pain (recent onset): 2-4 weeks for significant improvement Chronic lower back pain: 6-12 weeks for substantial improvement Disc-related problems: 8-16 weeks depending on severity Post-surgical back rehabilitation: 3-6 months for full recovery

What's the typical recovery time for neck pain and headaches?

Neck tension from desk work: 2-4 weeks Whiplash injuries: 6-12 weeks Tension headaches: 4-8 weeks Chronic neck pain: 8-16 weeks

How long does sports injury rehabilitation take?

Ankle sprains: 2-6 weeks depending on severity Running injuries: 6-12 weeks (varies by type and running history) Tennis elbow: 8-16 weeks Shoulder impingement: 6-12 weeks ACL reconstruction: 6-12 months for return to sport

What about recovery times for workplace injuries?

Treatment Phases and Progress

What should I expect in the first phase of physiotherapy treatment?

Week 1-2: Pain Relief and Assessment

  • Reduce acute pain and inflammation

  • Restore basic movement patterns

  • Begin gentle strengthening exercises

  • Education about your condition and recovery process

  • Initial functional improvements

How does treatment progress in the middle phase?

Week 3-6: Progressive Strengthening

  • Increase exercise intensity and complexity

  • Address movement patterns and biomechanics

  • Return to modified daily activities

  • Focus on preventing recurrence

  • Significant functional gains

What happens in the final phase of physiotherapy?

Week 6+: Return to Full Activity

  • Sport-specific or work-specific exercises

  • Performance optimization

  • Long-term maintenance strategies

  • Gradual return to pre-injury activity levels

  • Independence in self-management

How do I know if physiotherapy is working?

Signs that physiotherapy is working include:

  • Decreased pain levels during daily activities

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Better movement and flexibility

  • Increased strength and endurance

  • Ability to return to previous activities

  • Reduced pain medication dependence

  • Better understanding of your condition

Maximising Recovery Speed

How can I speed up my physiotherapy recovery?

Attendance and Consistency:

  • Attend sessions consistently as scheduled

  • Complete home exercise programs daily

  • Follow activity modification guidelines

Communication:

  • Communicate openly about your progress and concerns

  • Report any changes in symptoms promptly

  • Ask questions about your treatment

Lifestyle Factors:

  • Address contributing factors (stress, sleep, nutrition)

  • Make recommended ergonomic modifications

  • Stay active within prescribed limits

Does doing more exercises mean faster recovery?

Not necessarily. More isn't always better in physiotherapy. Overdoing exercises can lead to increased inflammation, delayed healing, setbacks in progress, and potential re-injury. Your physiotherapist designs your program with specific dosages and progressions for optimal healing.

How important are home exercises for recovery time?

Home exercises are crucial for recovery speed. Patients who consistently perform their home exercise programs typically recover 2-3 times faster than those who only attend clinic sessions. Home exercises maintain progress between appointments, address muscle imbalances throughout the week, and teach you self-management skills.

Can lifestyle factors affect my physiotherapy recovery time?

Absolutely. Factors that can slow recovery include:

  • Poor sleep quality (impairs tissue healing)

  • High stress levels (increases muscle tension and inflammation)

  • Poor nutrition (affects tissue repair)

  • Smoking (reduces blood flow and oxygen delivery)

  • Inadequate hydration (affects tissue quality)

  • Alcohol consumption (impairs healing processes)

When to Be Concerned

When should I be worried about slow progress in physiotherapy?

Contact your physiotherapist if you experience:

  • No improvement after 4-5 sessions

  • Worsening pain or function after 2-3 weeks

  • New symptoms that weren't present initially

  • Inability to perform daily activities that were previously manageable

  • Concerns about your treatment approach

What if I'm not getting better as fast as expected?

Your physiotherapist may need to:

  • Reassess your condition and diagnosis

  • Modify your treatment approach

  • Consider additional imaging or medical review

  • Refer to a specialist for further investigation

  • Adjust your exercise program or treatment intensity

  • Address any barriers to recovery you may have

Should I continue physiotherapy if I'm not seeing results?

If you're not seeing any improvement after 4-5 sessions, discuss this with your physiotherapist. They should reassess your condition and may recommend additional medical review, different treatment approach, or specialist referral. Don't continue the same treatment indefinitely without progress.

Long-term Expectations

Will I need physiotherapy forever?

Most conditions don't require ongoing physiotherapy indefinitely. The goal is to:

  • Resolve your current symptoms

  • Teach you self-management strategies

  • Prevent future recurrences

  • Return you to full function

Some chronic conditions may benefit from periodic "tune-up" sessions or maintenance programs.

How do I maintain my progress after physiotherapy ends?

Continue Your Exercise Program: Maintain the exercises that helped you recover Stay Active: Regular physical activity prevents many problems from returning Apply What You've Learned: Use proper ergonomics, movement patterns, and body awareness Seek Early Treatment: Address minor issues before they become major problems

When might I need to return to physiotherapy?

You might need additional physiotherapy for:

  • New injuries or conditions

  • Flare-ups of previous conditions

  • Changes in activity level or work demands

  • Preventive care before major activities

  • Maintenance of chronic conditions

Remember: Physiotherapy isn't just about treating your current injury - it's about getting you back to full function and preventing future problems. The investment in proper rehabilitation now saves time, money, and frustration later.
